Crystalens

The revolutionary Crystalens is an artificial intraocular lens used to replace the eye's natural lens. Developed to restore the eye's ability to change focus between near and far distances, Crystalens allows your eye to function more naturally at greater distances. Working in concert with your eye's ciliary muscles, Crystalens "flexes" to accommodate near, intermediate and distance vision.

With Crystalens, you can regain your vision quickly and painlessly. See the smile on a relative's face. Read the print in a book. See the beauty on a butterfly's wings, or a flower. Go for a drive on a sunny day. Live an independent lifestyle. Live your life fully and robustly!

Crystalens surgery is an elective medical procedure for people over 45 years old who may or may not have cataracts but want the ability to see far and near again without glasses. Crystalens surgery is performed at the Robbins Eye Center ambulatory surgery center.

The Crystalens procedure is the first and only FDA approved intraocular lens that has the unique ability to focus on objects at varying distances using the eye's natural muscle. Unlike standard (single vision) lens implants, this can provide sharper, brighter vision throughout a full range of vision from near to far and everything in between, without corrective lenses or glasses. Dr. Robbins was the first surgeon in Connecticut and one of the first eye surgeons in the country to perform Crystalens surgery. In fact, Dr. Robbins has performed more Crystalens surgery than all other eye surgeons in Connecticut combined.

Crystalens is engineered with a hinge designed to allow the optic, or part of the intraocular lens that you see through, to move back and forth as you constantly change focus on images around you.

Clinical study results indicate:
  • 98.4% patients could pass their driver's test without glasses
  • 100% could see intermediate distances (24' to 30') without glasses, the distance
  • for most of life's daily activities
  • 98.4% could read the newspaper without glasses
  • Some patients did require glasses for some tasks after the implantation

The Crystalens implant procedure is a safe and proven procedure performed on an outpatient basis. The procedure itself lasts about 20 minutes or less and is pain free. The natural lens is removed from the eye and the implant is then put in place of the original lens. The opening in the eye is very small and allows for quick healing.

Is Crystalens surgery for you? Does Insurance pay for Crystalens surgery?

If you have cataracts and want the benefit of this procedure, your insurance will generally cover part of the cost of the new technology Crystalens procedure. In particular, Medicare covers a portion of this procedure if you have cataracts.

For patients who do not have cataracts, Crystalens is an elective medical procedure typically not covered by insurance.

You may also have Crystalens even if you have had previous laser vision correction surgery.
