The Visian ICL (Implantable Collamer® Lens), often referred to as an implantable collamer
lens, is inserted into the eye during a short surgical procedure. Unlike LASIK or PRK
surgeries, the Visian ICL does not permanently alter the shape of the eye, and it may
offer greater improvement in your quality of vision. The Visian ICL procedure is
completely reversible. The breakthrough Visian ICL has restored vision to patients
who were previously not eligible for LASIK or PRK. Dr. Robbins offers the Visian ICL
surgery to patients with nearsightedness between -3.00D and -20.00 D.
The Visian ICL offers you freedom from nearsightedness. With the Visian ICL, you
could enjoy the beauty of a sunset, go snorkeling and observe amazing sea life, see a
friend's smile from across the room, or simply sit anywhere in a movie theater without
having to fuss with glasses or contacts.
After it is implanted, the Visian ICL is invisible to you and others and requires no
maintenance. Made of a collagen copolymer, the lens mimics naturally occurring collagen
in the eye and is easily accepted by the body. Visian ICL can correct a wider range of
myopia (nearsightedness) than LASIK or PRK techniques, and it can be removed if necessary.
More than 99 percent of patients in a clinical trail were satisfied with their vision
after the Visian ICL eye surgery. Patients experience almost immediate visual recovery.
The Visian ICL has proven effective in patients with a wide range of vision problems.
And because the eye surgery does not involve any structural alteration of the eye,
results are predictable and stable.
Dr. Robbins has performed ICL surgery at the Robbins Eye Center ambulatory surgery
center since 2006 and has performed more Visian ICL surgeries than all other eye surgeons
in Connecticut combined. Dr. Robbins was the first surgeon in Connecticut and one of the
first surgeons in the country to perform Visian ICL surgeries.
Lens Replacement with the Visian ICL
The procedure used to implant the Visian ICL has its origins in cataract surgery,
the most commonly performed eye surgery in the United States. The incision required to
implant the foldable Visian ICL is small and located on the far edge of the cornea,
significantly reducing the risk of interfering with vision. The lens is implanted
behind the eye's iris and is not visible. Its positioning within the eye maintains
normal iris functioning, promotes stability, and may reduce complications. The eye
surgery to implant the Visian ICL takes about 15 to 30 minutes and is relatively
painless.
Are you a good candidate for Visian ICL?
You should be between 21 and 45 years of age and be nearsighted. The ideal
candidate will not have undergone prior eye surgery and will not have a history
of eye disease such as iritis, glaucoma, or diabetic retinopathy.
Women who are pregnant or nursing should wait to have the Visian ICL implanted.
Those without a large enough anterior chamber depth or endothelial cell density
may not be a good candidate.
